MANSFIELD 66/67 • Jayne Mansfield Documentary
Subtitled "a true story based on rumor and hearsay," MANSFIELD 66/67 is about the last two years of movie goddess Jayne Mansfield’s life and the speculation swirling around her untimely death being caused by a curse after her alleged romantic dalliance with Anton LaVey, head of the Church of Satan. Was Jayne Mansfield's life spinning out of control, or did the devil make her do it? Featuring in-depth archival materials and current day interviews with John Waters, Mamie Van Doren, Kenneth Anger, Boy Marilyn, Tippi Hedren and more.
The decidedly pop-culture project uniquely came to life as part of the filmmakers' artist-in-residence collaboration at Leeds Beckett University, integrating the talents of over 100 students and professors across multiple academic disciplines. Contributors from the university's film, animation, music, and performing arts departments lent their expertise to the production, to earn their first professional feature film credits. The directors blur the lines of reality by blending classic interviews and archival footage with stylized animation, performance art, and experimental dance numbers featuring over 50 actors interpreting the blonde bombsehll's legacy.
MANSFIELD 66/67 celebrated its official world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), and went on to be recognized as an Outstanding Documentary Film nominee at the 2018 Women's Image Network (WIN) Awards. The film earned significant critical acclaim during its rollout, with Vanity Fair hailing it as a "rip-roaring good ride" that seriously engages with her career while reveling in the authentic and imagined absurdity of Hollywood gossip culture.
